Due to the tsunami in Dec 2004 several disaster relief projects have been started. For these projects The Ceylon Christian Care Foundation is working closely together with the Dutch aid foundation “Woord en Daad”. Relief help was given in the following areas:
First phase help (After Dec 26th 2004) : · Food distribution This started at the day of the tsunami. Since that day several thousands of food packages are distributed by the people of the VTC and orphan homes to the people. · Cooking utensils distribution Only a few aid organizations recognized the importance of the distribution of cooking utensils after the tsunami. People lost everything. Till today about 600 sets are distributed. · Sleeping mats In Sri Lanka people sleep on a mat on the ground. After the tsunami more than 700 mats were distributed. · Lighting A lot of families who lost their home do live after the tsunami in tents. More than 5000 hurricane lamps are distributed. · Water After the tsunami most of the water wells could not be used anymore because the sea water had salted the water. It can take up to 9 months before these wells can be used again. During this period clean drinking water has to be distributed. · Cloths Many families lost all their properties. Also their cloths. For that reason all kinds of cloths are distributed. · Tents A lot of organizations started distributing tents to people who lost their homes. We distributed more than 200 tents. · Medical Help Direct after the tsunami several medical teams were formed to help the people. We have seen people with broken legs, arms, lost eyes, etc. |

Second phase help (After Jan 18th 2005): · Trauma therapy After the tsunami there are many people with psychical problems. People who lost their family members and property. Training is set up to get people available who can give support to these people. · Nutricial feeding for children In the refugee camps day care centers for children are set up. From these centers nutricial food is distributed. · Tools for the working man Together with their houses many working people lost their tools. Also fisherman lost their boats and nets. A program is setup to provide these people with new tools so they can stat normal live again. · Education Several schools do not exist anymore, or people who lost their homes are living in these schools or in refugee camps. Education to the children in the refugee camps have started again by the older children of the orphan homes. In addition more than 5000 new school uniforms were stitched and distributed to the children.
Third phase help (After Jan 18th 2005): · Rebuilding houses This is the most costly phase. In this phase houses are rebuild. With the help of “Woord en Daad” the houses three villages will be rebuild. One of the villages that will be rebuild is a village were are living the Veddha’s. They are the original citizens of Sri Lanka. They lived already in Sri Lanka before the Singhalese and the Tamils came.
