Herman’s Girls Home

In the year 2000 Ceylon Christian Care started its activities on Sri Lanka with this orphan home. The first home was completely washed away by the tsunami and a new home was built in 2005. It was a miracle that not one of the girls died in the tsunami. At the time of the disaster they were in church (The tsunami came during church time).

Thirty girls in the age between 5 and 17 live in the home  .

The staff of this home consists of two wardens and a cook.

First Herman’s Girls Home Destroyed by the Tsunami

The waves of the tsunami on Sunday December 26th 2004 totally destroyed the first Herman’s Girls Home. At the time of he tsunami the wardens and the children attended the church service at the Boys Home Samuel compound. This church resisted the 6 meters high waves and the people and children inside were saved. The wife of the pastor and their 11 months old son were outside the church. They lost their lives in the waves of the tsunami and were never found back.

A village in the neighborhood of Herman’s Girls Home was completely destroyed. In this village 3,200 people (80 % of the population) drowned.

Orphan Care

As a result of 20 years of civil war and the tsunami in December 2004 there are many orphans in the Tamil area on Sri Lanka. Moreover there are many children who lost one of their parents. In many cases the single parent married again and left the children behind without caring for them.

Ceylon Christian Care runs the following orphan homes on Sri Lanka :
