Dear Friends,

Despite of al the tension and violence on Sri Lanka we are happy and thankful to report that the work on the Ceylon Christian Care projects still continues.

In this newsletter we like to give an overview of the activities of last month.

Murokkodanchenai

In this village Ceylon Christian Care started in March 2006 a community development (end of poverty) project. See for details “Community Development - Murokkodanchanai

The following progress was made during last month:

Family Cards

A family card is maintained for each of the 437 families of this village. This family card contains the following information:

1. The name of the chief occupant

2. The address

3. The national identity card no

4. The number of family members

5. The occupation of the chief occupant

This card also bear the progress of the help the family received from Ceylon Christian Care.

Wireless phones are purchased and a phone booth constructed. The villagers are now making use of this phone service.

Three-wheeler

A three-wheeler is purchased to transport sick people to the hospital.

Central Camp - Rural Area

In the rural area around Central Camp Ceylon Christian Care started with another community development (End of Poverty) project. See for details “Community Development - Central Camp Rural Area”.

On Saturday June 10th the selected 10 villagers from Central Camp - Rural Area received their motor bikes. The program started with a prayer of Rev. Mathiyaparanam. After this each recipients signed the required documents and received the motorbike, helmet, jacket and toolkit.

For each motorbike a file is created which contains the following information:

- The signed agreement between Ceylon Christian Care and the recipient

- A documents with the family details of the recipients

- A photograph of recipient

- The license for the year 2006

Medical Clinic

Every Saturday afternoon a medical clinic, which consist of a doctor and a nurse, visit the village. In each clinic the doctor treats 75-90 patients. The people of the village are very happy with this service. Normally they have to walk a long distance with their illness. Now sick elderly people, young children and others are being treated in their village and receive good care by the medical team.

Most of the sick people coming for treatment are very poor. Some families whenever they fall sick have never gone to see doctor or visit a hospital because they do not have the money to pay the bus.

Construction of Wells

The first wells have been constructed. The villagers are asked to work with the constructer. The result is that the construction of wells progresses faster as expected.

Public Market Place

A public market place is constructed and opened. The people who use this place for their business pay 10SRp a day. This money is used to recollect the money spent for the shed.

Sewing Training

For the ladies of the village a sewing training is started. Here they learn how to make and repair clothes. At this moment 25 ladies follow this training.

Micro Credits

Several families have received a loan to start some business as poultry, selling fish, selling vegetables and make and sell of flowerpots. The average loan people receive has a value of 50 US$.

The fisherman and the vegetables sellers are using the market place to sell their products.

As mentioned at the beginning of this update, although all tension and violence, the projects are still progressing well. This in a time that many people of this country live with fear and many foreign organizations have left the country. The work to be done by Rev Jeyanesan and his people is not always easy. However till today we see that the Lord blesses this work and many people are helped.

In my last phone conversation with Rev Jeyanesan he asked us to pray for him, the people who help him and his country. May we also bring this to your attention.

Kind regards,

Herman van der Weerd
